Tonya D. Wright

Creative Consultant

"I’m not designing to add another notch to my portfolio or to bring in another client. I design for the long term, to build partnerships. Building a solid brand takes time. There has to be chemistry and trust between the client and creative."

Interview with Tonya

How long have you been designing?

I have been growing and learning in this field for over 17 years. It really feels great to do what I am passionate about; and that is building brands. Not just business brands, but personal brands as well.

I am also an instructer for graphic design and web development certificate programs. I want my students to learn the design and business side of this industry, with the benefit of learning from my mistakes and successes.

What is your creative background?

I come from a creative family. My mom is a painter and my dad was a photographer.

When I was younger, I didn’t have a plan, so, I enlisted and honorably completed 12 years in the United States Marine Corps. This was a great way to understand being in service to others.

After seeing so much trauma, I decided that my way to positively give back was to try to make everything I touch beautiful. That’s what being a creative means to me - creating a beautiful and impactful visual story.

What is your niche?

I have corporate, government, academia and nonprofit experience. Yet, there is nothing like working with startups and small businesses. It’s a fresh slate full of potential. Understanding the vision of the client and successfully bringing it to life is a wonderful thing.

I’m not designing to add another notch to my portfolio or to bring in another client. I design for the long term, to build partnerships. Building a solid brand takes time. There has to be chemistry and trust between the client and creative.

What is your creative process with a client?

Information is power. I want who I am working with to learn and to be informed. Face it, I may not be their creative partner for the long haul, but I want them to be equipped to make great choices for their brand.

What is success to you?

I am an award-winning creative, but there is nothing like witnessing the growth and success of an organization that I have worked with. That is success - PRICELESS.
